split boarding Tahoe’s back country

This has been a bleak winter for snow, especially after last year’s 700 inches of snow – almost double the annual average. We’ve been hurting and had something like 120″ all season. Water levels are at 34% of average from what the meteorologists are saying.

Despite the lack of snow, I’ve been up a few times and went to my first back country split boarding class. It was pretty amazing and really fun. We hiked part of the Pacific Crest Trail and made our way from Old Highway 40 – Donner Pass Road to the top of Mt. Judah, hiking along the ridge to the backside of one of Sugarbowl’s 4 peaks. This shot is of our last few hundred feet climbing up to the backside of Mt. Judah.

Really a fun time, extremely well organized tour with a great guide through Alpine Skills International. I’d do it again in a heartbeat.
